Okatie, SC (July 12, 2010) — Beaufort-Jasper Water & Sewer Au thority has been alerted to a telephone scam in our area. Over the past several days, unidentified persons have contacted BJWSA customers asking for credit card information in order to pay a past due balance and avoid water service interruption. These calls are occurring during the day and after business hours (5pm). In some instances caller ID traces the number back to “private” and other times to a disconnected number.

Please be advised that BJWSA does not place collection calls due to non-payment and does not call customers after 5pm. Furthermore, when a representative from BJWSA contacts a customer, the caller ID will always identify the call as originating from a BJWSA telephone number. In the case of receiving such a call, do not give credit card information over the phone to these unidentified callers and hang up immediately .

You may call BJWSA  at (843) 987-9292 to access and verify information about your account or you can call your local police department. For more information about this scam, please contact Matthew Brady, Communications Manager, at (843) 987-9213.
