(Okatie, SC November 2, 2020) —Last year, more than 500 local fifth graders toured Beaufort-Jasper Water & Sewer Authority’s (BJWSA) wastewater plants over a two-day period for the inaugural Trick or Treatment event. Employees dressed as superstars and led students through the plants and to exhibits where they learned about the treatment process.
This year BJWSA is offering a virtual Trick or Treatment, available online at www.bjwsa.org/education-outreach/trick-or-treatment-wastewater-event. The webpage includes links to videos featuring the Swampy the Great Swamp Steward, a game called “What can I flush?” and interviews with subject matter experts in a variety of departments.
“Our goal has been to bring to the students an educational, but entertaining manner of learning,” says Lou Brown, public education and engagement planner. “We had such a great response last year that we had to start a waiting list for the next event in the spring. Once we cancelled the spring tour, we decided to go virtual. We hope viewers of all ages will benefit from learning about the process.”
On the tour, participants will discover what employees do every day to ensure that wastewater is properly collected, treated and released – in compliance with state and federal guidelines. They’ll view educational and informative video clips that will bring a better understanding about what it takes to sustain BJWSA’s mission to inspire trust and enhance public health.
